Minor Model Adjustments

Feedback: More rounded fingers for more realistic model. – Amil

Some minor adjustments on the model: smoothing certain edges to create smooth realistic stylised League of Legends model, adding more poly to make rounder fingers, extruded metal pieces on her arms to fully follow the concept art while following the poly limit. Hence, the model came to a conclusion within the poly limit of 10000 faces / 20000 tris. Model’s faces and tris:

  • Faces: 9997
  • Tris: 19541

UV Unwrap

I tried to use the UV map very effectively by leaving no negative space since the limit is only 2 maps. In this stage, I also used the Texel Density that Amil told us about in order to create the same scale ratio across all UV unwrap with a map size of 1024 (as stated in the project’s requirement), this also ensures that all UVs have the same resolution while texturing. However, some UV unwraps were intentionally scaled up, because they consists of details or features which catch the audience’s attention, for example: the face, hair, and metal parts.

Texturing

I heavily focused and mimic the texture of League of Legends (2009) playable champions and some aspects that I noticed were their hand painted art style, the contrasting and bold colours of lights and shadows, faking shadows instead of relying on the 3D software’s lights and shadows, and saturated and vibrant colour palette. Following these aspects, I tried my best to hand paint the model. Furthermore, I also found that its artstyle’s quite painterly / smudgy, so I was able to constantly take advantage of the most basic brush: soft rounded brush (also the smudge tool), to mimic the effect. Additionally from its coloure palette, I noticed that the characters’ white coloured elements are often coloured in blue instead of pure white / gray, this is to avoid muddy colour. Another aspect to avoid muddy colour that I noticed are warm / cool shadows, hence I used the ‘overlay’ layer to create this effect to further enhance the vibrant colour palette.
